Electric cars must not be that expensive, says Volkswagen boss

Electric cars must not cost more than petrol and diesel cars do today. Because if that happens, the customers will be gone, says the new sales manager .

If it says Volkswagen, the price of electric cars must be the same as the price of petrol cars.

In fact, according to Volkswagen's new head of sales, Martin Sander, it is precisely the price that is decisive for whether the brand can sell electric cars or not.

– Many drivers have a specific budget with a specific budget when shopping for a car.

– And that regardless of whether they buy or lease it. If there is no electric car within that framework, motorists will inevitably choose a new car with a combustion engine, says Sander to Automobilwoche .

Today, electric cars are often more expensive than equivalent models with a combustion engine. An electric car like the Volkswagen ID.3, for example, costs around DKK 55,000 more than a petrol-powered Golf back home in Germany.

Sander believes, however, that electric cars can already be priced at the same level as petrol cars in periods.

In order to make the periods permanent, however, Volkswagen must have cut costs significantly. The brand has already announced massive wage cuts and the closure of several factories.

– It is important that we work to reduce costs and pass the savings on to the buyers, says Sander.

In addition to lowering electric car prices, Volkswagen has also raised the prices of petrol and diesel cars in Germany. However, it is not with the good will of the brand, believes Sander.

– We are still in the middle of high inflation, so we need to adjust prices, he says.

On the other hand, Volkswagen is not the only one to make petrol and diesel cars significantly more expensive. The same is happening right now at sister brand Audi. And it's actually the second time this year. Read more about it here .
