New proposal: "Motorists must be prohibited from speeding over 30 km/h"

All motorists must be prohibited from speeding over 30 km/h in the cities. It is a myth that you progress more slowly, says the European Road Safety Council.

If it says to the NGO European Road Safety Council, all motorists in all European cities must be prohibited from driving above 30 km/h.

It is a myth when it is claimed that a speed limit of 30 km/h creates traffic jams in the city.

It would rather not be more expensive for society to force drivers to slow down, claims the NGO.

According to the European Road Safety Council, you can actually save money by imposing a general speed limit of 30 km/h for all cars. At least rather than doing it gradually.

Because even though it will initially cost money – i.a. because all traffic lights and controls must be adjusted to the new speeds – the benefits of the lower speed will far exceed that price, it says.

As an example, the European Road Safety Council cites the situation in Wales, where the government has introduced a national speed limit of 20 miles per hour, equivalent to 32 km/h.

This has, says the NGO, already meant for one insurance company that the number of damage reports from motorists has fallen by 20 percent.

The NGO also points out that national legislation has been adopted in Austria, which leaves it up to the individual cities whether they want to prohibit motorists from driving faster than 30 km/h.

More or less the same is the case here at home. All Danish cities have been allowed to introduce environmental zones where certain diesel cars are not allowed to drive. And the big cities adopt one majority after another that motorists must drive more slowly.

In Odense, for example, a majority wants motorists to follow a general speed limit of 20 km/h in the city. The city government also wants to make it prohibited to drive 110 and 130 km/h on the motorway.
