Danish city introduces new ban on motorists

In Odense, a controversial ban has been adopted. The ban means that a busy shopping street is closed to through traffic.

Odense prohibits continuous traffic on Skibhusvej. From spring 2024, it will no longer be possible to drive a car through the southern part of Skibhusvej in Odense C.

A majority in Odense City Council, consisting of the Social Democracy, SF, Enhedslisten, Radikale Venstre and Moderaterten, has adopted a plan that closes the road to thoroughfare car traffic. Conservatives, Venstre and Liberal Alliance voted against the proposal.

The plan involves the establishment of a lock in the middle of Skibhusvej. It only allows bicycles, buses and vans with a special mission to pass. In addition, a cycle lane will be introduced, where motorists must stay behind cyclists.

A speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour will apply in most of the Skibhuskvarteret.

This is written by TV2 Fyn .

For the courage of the city council, citizens demonstrated both for and against the plan in front of Odense Town Hall. The debate on Skibhusvej lasted for over three hours before the city council made its decision.

The closure of Skibhusvej is expected to significantly affect traffic flow in the area. Today, around 8,000 cars daily pass through the southern part of the road.

However, Odense is far from finished making life miserable for motorists. Back in November 2023, a majority of the city council adopted a so-called mobility plan that prohibits everything from parking in certain parts of the city to speeds over 20 km/h. Read more about it here .

However, it is not only in Odense that there is a city council that does not like car traffic. The same is the case in Aarhus.

In Jutland, there are therefore plans to charge for driving on all roads in the city. So a so-called payment ring. A similar unloading had to be dropped in Copenhagen in February 2012.
