New survey: This is why Danes avoid electric cars

Although the electric car may be cheaper in terms of immediate operating costs, many Danes still stay away, shows a new investigation by the EU Commission.

A new survey by the European Commission's organization European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) shows that Danes are still hesitant to switch to electric cars.

And that even though there have never been more electric cars or public charging stations in Denmark than right now.

The survey shows that 31.6 percent of Danes are considering buying an electric car within the next 5 years.

The biggest barrier to electric cars in Denmark is the higher purchase price, which 50 percent of Danes point to as an obstacle. Even if electric cars under DKK 436,000 do not have to pay registration tax.

In Sweden, however, motorists' satisfaction with the price is much higher. As many as 64 percent believe that the price deters them from buying a new electric car. In addition to the price, many Danes also experience challenges in charging their electric cars.

– The focus has been on expanding the charging infrastructure along our major roads.

– There are still challenges with private individuals who live in rental properties and owner-occupied apartments lacking the opportunity to charge the car at home, says Petter Dahlin, head of the E-mobility unit at the Swedish Energy Agency to ViBilägare.

At the same time, the survey shows that the Danes who have already bought an electric car emphasize the lower ownership costs as the primary advantage.

Despite a higher purchase price, e-cars can be cheaper to run than petrol and diesel cars, primarily due to lower service and "fuel" costs.

But especially the cost of one thing that electric cars cannot do without still shocks many Danes. Read more about it here .
