Half of these cars have disappeared in Denmark

The import of used petrol and diesel cars from Sweden to Denmark is at a historically low level, according to brand new figures from the Motorstyrelsen.

The import of used petrol and diesel cars from Sweden to Denmark has been nothing short of a nosedive in the past year.

The explanation must include found in the very low value of the Swedish kroner and a government subsidy for electric cars.

A new report from the Motorstyrelsen, which Autoparts24 has been given, shows that in the first ten months of this year, around 1,800 used electric cars have been imported from Sweden.

In comparison, the figure for the whole of 2022 was 283 cars, which is an increase of over 500 percent.

On the other hand, interest in used petrol cars from Sweden has halved. The import of these fossil-fueled cars has fallen from just over 1,000 cars to around 500 in the same period.

Troels Meier, director of Autoparts24, sees the development as a clear reflection of changed preferences among Danish car buyers.

He points out that the Swedish subsidies for electric cars, which have been dropped again, combined with the weak Swedish krone, have made used electric cars more accessible and economically attractive for Danish buyers.

– There has been an enormous appetite for electric cars here at home, and in Sweden there have been state subsidies for the purchase of new electric cars, which, together with the low Swedish krone, have made it attractive for Danes to buy used electric cars.

– And at the same time, it has made petrol cars less attractive, Troels Meier.

According to Meier, the increased import of electric cars from Sweden points to greater development in the Danish car fleet.

He sees it as an expression of the changes in the foreign car markets which directly reduce Danish motorists' desire to spend money.

– The Danish car fleet is going through major changes in recent years.

– And overall, it is positive that the used cars we import are helping to support the green transition and have a large part of our fossil car fleet replaced by cars without emissions of particles, he adds.

However, Denmark is a very small country. Even taken together with the rest of Scandinavia, it is certainly not everywhere that the electric car has caught on with motorists. Read more about it here .
