86 places in Norway have completely eradicated new petrol cars

In 86 Norwegian municipalities, there are no new petrol and diesel cars at all anymore. They have all been outcompeted by the electric car, a new report shows.

New figures show that electric cars dominate the sale of new vehicles in large parts of Norway, while petrol and diesel cars have become a rarer sight on the roads in our neighboring country.

In 86 out of Norway's 357 municipalities, all new cars now run exclusively on electricity. This development is seen especially in the urban areas.

– There are still some who believe that electric cars do not work in the village. But they are simply wrong, says Christina Bu, general secretary of the Electric Vehicle Association, in a press release .

The distribution shows that Nordland is the region where electric cars account for 100 percent of new car sales. In total, this concerns 16 municipalities. While the Innlandet region follows with 13 municipalities, Trondelag with 12 municipalities and Troms with 10 municipalities.

Nationally, it is only in two municipalities, Folldal and Flekkefjord, that electric cars make up less than half of new car sales, with 33 and 47 percent respectively.

Overall, 335 of the 355 municipalities where new cars were sold in the course of 2024 have an electric car share of over 75 percent.

The information originates from the Norwegian Road Traffic Authority, which continuously registers both new and used road vehicles in Norway.

However, it was not long ago that the Norwegians had to retract a very central claim about the dominance of electric cars in the country. Read more about it here .

However, electric cars are finding it difficult to get hold of anyone other than drivers in the Nordic countries. In Europe's largest car market, sales of the car type collapsed for nine months in a row when the tax support was removed in December last year.

Later, the German government, which otherwise suspended the scheme in order to patch economic holes in the treasury, has, however, promised to partially introduce state subsidies for electric cars again.
