Do LED headlights dazzle drivers? Yes, say 78 percent

The LED bulb has done a lot of good for visibility. But the strong light also dazzles 78 percent of drivers, research shows.

78 percent of drivers regularly or constantly experience being dazzled by bright headlights, often from cars equipped with LED lights.

This is shown by a survey conducted among 13,000 motorists.

With the increasing use of LED bulbs in headlights, as well as cars that have generally become taller, it has become more common to be dazzled in traffic.

When the trend is combined with street lighting, which is switched off on certain roads to save electricity, some drivers' vision is seriously tested. And that is a danger to road safety.

In England, the problem with the 'blind' drivers is now so great that the authorities have launched an investigation.

The BBC writes that.

The investigation, which the Transport Research Laboratory is behind, will reveal how annoying the light from modern cars' LED lights really is.

In the investigation, cars equipped with measuring instruments are used, which can register light levels as the drivers experience them.

The technology also takes into account light from the other surroundings and weather conditions. According to the British, it provides as detailed an overview as possible. After this, researchers must look at how light from oncoming cars affects the individual driver's ability to find their way around.

Even a few seconds of blinding can mean that drivers lose their orientation. And especially at high speeds, this means that the cars drive long distances without the drivers actually being able to see anything. For the same reason, drivers who use the high beam must also show special consideration for oncoming traffic.

On the other hand, more and more cars today are equipped with lights that are so advanced that they can dazzle themselves or throw the light 'around' oncoming traffic so as not to dazzle.
