There are very few of them. But now one of them is for sale. The world's rarest Toyota Supra, a GT500, must find a new home.
The world's rarest Toyota Supra is up for sale. Specifically, this is one of the very few GT500 cars that were built in 2000.
The car, which originally ran short races with the number 38 on the side, was driven around the Japanese racetracks by Hironori Takeuchi and Yuji Tachikawa during the 2000 season. Back then, the car was wrapped in the iconic blue and yellow colors from FK/Massimo.
After the season, car number 38 was assigned a new chassis. And this particular Supra instead got the number 33 and the characteristic cdmaOne CERUMO paintwork. But in fact the car lasted only one season.
As is the case with most racing cars, this GT500-spec Supra shares only the name with the street car. Because although the two look similar from the outside, technically there are not many common features to look for.
In the engine compartment, for example, there should have been a two-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. Toyota's motorsport division, TDR, chose to throw out the inline-six 2JZ because it was too heavy.

On the other hand, the smaller, four-cylinder engine is closely related to the 3S-GTE turbo engine from the Celica GT-Four rally car. But today the car is 'just' an empty shell.
However, it still has its original carbon fiber dashboard. The instrumentation is otherwise digital. There is also a roll cage and one of the very few parts that the race car shares with the street car. Namely the light switch.
But then there's the price. We don't know that one. In fact, the auction house that has the car for sale only wants to come up with an estimate of between 13 and 18 million Japanese yen. So we have to wait for the hammer blow which falls on the weekend 16-17. November.
Did you know that Toyota intends to keep the Supra name alive? And even though BMW is putting its sister car, the Z4, in the grave. The Japanese even equip the current model with a V8 engine. Read more about it here .
