The car giant is recalling 16,500 cars – the brakes may fall off

Volvo is now recalling 16,500 copies because there is a risk of the brake pedal in a large number of models falling off.

Volvo has recalled 16,500 cars globally because, due to a serious manufacturing defect, there is a risk of the brake pedal in the cars falling off.

Affected models include Volvo S60, V60, S90, V90, V90CC, S90L, XC60 and XC90. Volvo Cars states that 1,621 cars are being recalled in Sweden alone.

Specifically, it concerns a number of cars from the 2020-2021 model years, where the manufacturing defect can mean that the brake pedal breaks. The reason? That the suspension to which the pedal is attached does not have the necessary strength.

– Due to a manufacturing defect, the brake pedal rod may not be secured with the specified torque and may therefore come loose. If this happens, it can result in reduced braking ability and/or loss of control over the tow truck, says Volvo.

Although the car's parking brake can be used to stop the trailer in an emergency, failure of the primary brake pedal can still lead to dangerous situations.

Volvo emphasizes that the risk of accidents increases if the braking ability weakens or there is a sudden loss of control. And that it can cause serious damage to both drivers, passengers and other road users.

"A reduction in braking performance and/or a loss of vehicle control may increase the risk of an accident causing personal injury or death to passengers or other road users," reads Volvo's formal recall.

Volvo has therefore launched a recall campaign to remedy the problem. The owners of the affected cars will be contacted by Volvo and they will be offered an inspection and repair of the brake pedal rod at the car brand's expense.

The recall comes just days after Stellantis, the world's fourth largest car group, recalled over 44,000 cars with similar problems. Read more about it here .
