New figures: Tesla loses important position to Volkswagen

Tesla's new car sales in Germany continue to fall. The American car brand must now cede first place to the otherwise crisis-stricken Volkswagen.

In Germany, both Volkswagen and BMW have overtaken Tesla in sales of electric cars. New figures from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) show that Tesla is experiencing a significant decline in sales this year.

Volkswagen has sold 49,200 electric cars in Germany so far this year, while BMW has sold 33,167. Tesla has sold 31,461 electric cars in the same period.

Compared to last year, both Volkswagen and Tesla have sold fewer electric cars. Tesla has sold 23,300 fewer cars this year, while Volkswagen's sales have fallen by 9,400 cars. BMW is the only brand that has seen an increase in sales. This has resulted in 6,600 more electric cars than last year.

There are several reasons for Tesla's decline. Competition on the German electric car market has intensified, and both established car manufacturers such as Volkswagen and BMW, and new players, are now putting pressure on the Americans.

In addition, global supply chains and the economic situation in Germany may also play a role.

It is interesting that the Germans are far from as fond of electric cars as the Danes are. After the German government immediately suspended support for new electric cars in December 2023, sales of the car type fell immediately.

And the decline did not actually stop before October 2024. At home, several actors in the car industry fear that they are facing the same scenario. The tax exemption that the vast majority of electric cars enjoy in Denmark is about to expire.

The same applies to the reimbursement scheme, which means that electric car owners receive the electricity tax per kWh left if they leave it at home. Read more about it here .
