Media: Ferrari F40 resurrects after 32 years

The car was the last Enzo Ferrari saw alive. And after 32 years, Ferrari is ready to revive the iconic F40 as part of the Icona range.

According to Top Gear, the next car in the Icona range could be a tribute to the F40. The media refers to anonymous but "very reliable" sources.

Usually Top Gear doesn't bring these kinds of stories, which makes this one more believable. It is also worth noting that the story was written by the editors-in-chief of the magazine and the website.

Previous Icona models are not simply retro interpretations of older models. SP1, SP2 and SP3 clearly refer to the past but with modern design and technology.

Each model is produced in a limited number. For example, there were 499 copies of the Monza and 599 of the Daytona – and each costs over DKK 7.5 million. Regardless of the SP4's design, which may be called the F40, you can expect a similar limited production and high price.

The SP1 and SP2 were based on the 812 Superfast. The cars used the 812's chassis and engine. While the SP3 was much closer to the LaFerrari. The biggest difference was and is that the hybrid part is missing in SP3.

Perhaps Ferrari in an F40-inspired SP4 combines a carbon fiber chassis with the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine from the SF90.

Cars like the Icona series are extremely profitable for Ferrari. Since they are based on existing components, they are cheaper to develop.

But because the cars are very limited in number, there are many real drivers out there who are willing to pay huge sums for the cars. Ferrari can then also pick and choose between the people on the waiting list for an Icona car.

To get on the waiting list for an Icona, you have to be a more than average 'good' Ferrari customer, which means that the hopeful souls have already contributed significantly to the Maranello marque's gigantic turnover.

But as Top Gear points out, a revival of the F40 may have been seen as sacrilegious by some. As a blemish on Ferrari's history.

Just look at the new interpretation Lamborghini Countach. A car that the original Countach designer, Marcello Gandini, didn't really care about at all.

In addition, one can speculate whether a new F40 would overshadow the new flagship F80 which is a direct replacement for the LaFerrari.

However, Ferrari has been successful with the Icona series so far, so there's no indication that the SP4 won't be at least as successful. Regardless of whether it is inspired by the F40 or not.
