Xpeng scraps electric car ceilings and builds a hybrid engine

The Chinese electric car brand Xpeng can no longer claim that they only build electric cars. The model program is being expanded with a hybrid platform for so-called EREV cars.

The Chinese electric car brand Xpeng, best known for electric cars, has announced a new strategy focusing on EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicles) models. The technology combines a battery pack and electric motors with a small, quiet petrol engine that acts as a generator.

EREV models have previously had challenges with noise from the internal combustion engine. But Xpeng claims to have solved this problem.

The Chinese's new system, called Kunpeng Super Electric, has a petrol engine that is so quiet that the noise level in the cabin only increases by one decibel when the engine is switched on.

– According to the car brand, the noise level in the interior must only increase by one decibel when the engine is switched on, Insideevs writes.

The Kunpeng Super Electric system is expected to provide a range of 430 kilometers alone and a combined range of up to 1,400 kilometers. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 12 minutes.

Xpeng's managing director, He Xiaopeng, presented the new system during AI Day. But the director did not reveal when it will be launched. However, he emphasized that Xpeng's EREV system will be unique.

This strategic change by Xpeng follows a trend among automakers that are increasingly dropping goals to build only electric cars. Most recently, another Chinese brand has announced that it will not only build electric cars in 2030 after all. The director called it 'an easy decision' to drop the ceiling.
