Mazda refuses to give up – develops brand new petrol engine

Several of the Japanese car brands are skeptical about letting the electric car take over the entire model range. Mazda is now developing a completely petrol engine.

At a time when many car manufacturers are focusing on electrification, Mazda continues to invest in the development of new internal combustion engines.

According to Mazda's latest quarterly accounts, the brand is working on a completely new gasoline-powered engine called Skyactiv-Z.

This new four-cylinder engine is expected to replace both the current Skyactiv-G, a traditional gasoline engine, and the Skyactiv-X, which combines elements of both gasoline and diesel technology.

The Skyactiv-Z will be launched in 2027 and will use a special combustion technology aimed at improving efficiency in both low and high rev ranges.

Mazda has not released detailed specifications for the Skyactiv-Z yet. However, it has been confirmed that the technology behind the new engine will later also be implemented in Mazda's six-cylinder engines.

In addition to Skyactiv-Z, Mazda is also working on a next-generation Wankel engine. At the same time, Mazda has entered into a collaboration with two other car manufacturers to extend the life of combustion engines.

Mazda's continued focus on internal combustion engines sets them apart from many other automakers that are increasingly prioritizing electric vehicles. It will be interesting to see how Mazda's strategy develops in the coming years.

Mazda is not the only car brand in Japan that is skeptical about electric cars. Toyota's chairman and former director, Akio Toyoda, for example, does not believe that electric cars will ever gain more than 30 percent of the market.

Recently, one car brand after another has also been in a row to drop ceilings on only building electric cars. One of them is Volvo. And here the management calls it 'an easy decision'. Read more about it here .
