Audi has cheated – recalls 700,000 cars

Audi is now recalling 700,000 cars because the transport authorities in Germany, the KBA, believe that the brand is cheating with the calibration of the EGR valve.

Audi is recalling over 700,000 cars in Germany following orders from the German transport authority KBA.

According to the authorities, the affected cars, built between 2009 and 2017, are equipped with a manipulated EGR valve that does not meet current emission requirements. The recall affects models such as the Audi A4, A5, A6 and Q5.

The problems with the EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) mean that the emission-limiting equipment in the cars generally does not work correctly.

The system must reduce the amount of nitrogen by feeding part of the exhaust gases back into the engine.

But in the affected cars, this process does not work as it should according to the legislation. In order to control the cars' emissions of nitrogen, Audi initially believes that it is enough to update the software that controls the process.

Owners of the models in question will be asked to have the bumpers checked at a brand workshop.

Previously, car manufacturers such as Audi could use the so-called "temperature window", a function that temporarily switches off the emission treatment under certain conditions, for example in cold weather.

The method, said i.a. Volkswagen Group, was used to protect engine components from wear.

But following a ruling by the European Court of Justice, the use of the temperature window is now strictly regulated and only permitted under special circumstances.

However, it is not only Audi that has come under the spotlight of the authorities for this kind of cheating. Exactly the same thing happened earlier this year for Volvo. The Chinese brand, however, completely fits in. Read more about it here .

It remains unclear whether the recall also applies to Danish owners of the Audi models in question. If the toy cars in Denmark are covered, Audi must issue the recall via the authorities. The car brand may not contact the owners themselves.
