Car giant lays off 9,000 people – wants to sell Mitsubishi

Nissan, like many other of the so-called 'legacy brands', has been hit hard in terms of earnings. Now the Japanese want to fire 9,000 people and get rid of Mitsubishi.

Nissan plans to lay off 9,000 people. Like the brand will reduce its stake in Mitsubishi by a third.

When the brand presented its quarterly accounts this week, managing director Makoto Uchida made it clear that it 'stands in an extremely difficult situation'.

This is written by Automobilwoche.

The director himself made it clear that he is immediately taking a fifty percent pay cut. The 9,000 positions that Uchida and the rest of the management must now cut correspond to six percent of Nissan's global payroll.

The car brand's management has also already said that the layoffs will take place across all the markets where it is present. However, Uchida will not yet set precise rankings in which countries and among which positions are to be fired.

In the last quarter, Nissan lost 9.3 billion Japanese yen, equivalent to just under half a billion Danish kroner.

When the quarterly results were published, Uchida acknowledged that Nissan has not responded quickly or flexibly enough to decisive changes in the auto industry. Including the cars' demand and sky-high prices for everything from raw materials to spare parts.

– I take this situation very seriously.

– Nissan will restructure its business to become leaner and more robust, the director told the journalists present, according to the AP news agency .

Nissan is far from being the only brand under economic pressure. This week alone, both BMW and Audi have reported insanely large losses in the last quarter. Audi seems to be the worst hit.

In Ingolstadt, profits have plummeted by as much as 91 percent. At the same time, it has emerged that the car brand will now raise the price of all models with a combustion engine. The same thing happened back in January, when diesel and petrol cars became 2.3 percent more expensive on average.
