107 copies of the scandal-hit electric car Chevrolet Bolt have been recalled again. And again, the car brand advises owners not to fully charge due to the risk of fire.
General Motors (GM) has announced another recall of the Chevrolet Bolt, this time due to a software bug that could increase the risk of fire. The recall includes 107 Bolt EV and EUV models from 2020-2022 that were previously repaired during a larger recall in 2021.
The original recall was due to problems with the battery that could cause a fire. As part of the first recall, GM dealers installed a piece of advanced diagnostic software that was supposed to alert owners to battery failures.
However, it has been found that this software was not installed correctly in all cars.
In the affected cars, the software error may prevent proper identification of faulty battery modules that require replacement. Something that increases the risk of fire.
The bug was discovered in July 2024, when a Bolt still wouldn't charge more than 80 percent, even though the first software was actually supposed to turn off after 10,000 kilometers.

GM must now, through the authorities, tell the owners of the affected cars that they will have to go to the workshop again. The cars that is. This must be done no later than 16 December this year.
Until then, GM recommends that owners limit charging the battery pack to 90, charge more often and avoid draining the battery below 70 miles of range. In addition, the cars must be parked outside immediately after charging and not left indoors – for example in a closed garage – overnight.
This recall is the latest in a series of problems with the Chevrolet Bolt that have damaged GM's reputation. The problems with the Bolt stand in contrast to other recalls in the electric car industry, where software updates can often fix the problems.
For example, Tesla has recalled over 140,000 cars due to the risk of fire, but here a software update could remedy the problem.
