Electric car exploded – owner wanted to extinguish it with a garden hose

An electric car exploded in a sea of flames and caused extensive damage to a family's home in Northamptonshire, England. The owner was watching television when he heard a loud bang.

Scott Bayliss lost his Mercedes worth DKK 450,000 when he and his family were watching television in the living room.

When they wanted to investigate where there was a sudden very loud bang, they found their Mercedes EQA engulfed in flames in the driveway.

– There was fire everywhere, says Scott Bayliss to the Daily Mail.

Scott Bayliss and a neighbor tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, but the flames quickly spread and completely destroyed the car. The facade of the house also suffered significant damage. Firefighters arrived later and extinguished the fire.

According to Scott Bayliss, the car had been out in the traffic for 10 hours without being connected to a charging box when the explosion happened.

The incident was caught on the family's surveillance cameras, but the cause of the fire is still unknown. The family tells local media that it was lucky they hadn't gone to bed yet when the car caught fire. But now they are more than critical of Mercedes' handling of the situation.

– Nothing has really happened apart from the fact that they said 'we will carry out an investigation'. They said nothing about the human element," says the now former Mercedes owner.

Mercedes has offered the family a loaner car. But Scott has rejected the offer. "To be completely honest, I don't want to ever get into a Mercedes again.

A spokesman for Mercedes has since commented on the accident to The Sun newspaper. However, Mercedes in England does not want to say much.

– We have been notified (about the accident, ed.) today and will shortly begin an investigation. Until then, please understand that we cannot comment further on the incident.

The accident happens just a few months after a grandfather managed to rescue his grandson from a brand new Volvo whose battery pack exploded. Read more about that case here .
