European city bans traffic "just in case"

In France, the capital Paris is getting ready to ban through traffic in certain parts of the city. At the same time, the speed is reduced elsewhere. Officially, it's about security.

France introduces new restrictions on traffic in Paris. In order to reduce through-traffic, the city now prohibits roundabouts in a central zone of 5.5 square kilometers.

From November 4, only residents and people on errands in the zone may enter the area bounded by the Place de la Concorde, the Seine, the Opera and the Place de la République.

The ban is part of a comprehensive traffic plan spearheaded by Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

The aim is to reduce noise and air pollution and to improve traffic safety in the city. The change must also facilitate accessibility for residents, visitors with specific destinations in the zone and citizens with reduced mobility.

That's what Forbes writes.

It is still permitted to enter the area to visit the doctor, shops, restaurants, galleries and the like.

It is estimated that between 350,000 and 500,000 cars drive through Paris every day, a significant part of which is through traffic. The new initiative is expected to reduce traffic volume and noise levels by 7-30 percent.

In addition to the restrictions in the central zone, Paris has also closed roads along the Seine to car traffic and turned them into pedestrian streets.

The city is steadily establishing more cycle paths and green areas, and the speed limit has also been lowered to 30 kilometers per hour in several places. In October, the speed limit on the motorway around Paris was also reduced from 70 to 50 kilometers per hour.

However, Paris does not only ban car traffic in certain places. A majority have also decided that it should be much more expensive to park. But just not for all drivers. Read more about it here .
