Hyundai's new hydrogen car Initium is already on the streets in 2025

Right now there are no hydrogen stations in Denmark. But now EU rules will force them back, and this is good news for Hyundai Initium, which will be launched in 2025.

For a number of years, Hyundai has been one of the few car manufacturers to bet on hydrogen technology. Their current hydrogen car, Nexo, is expected to be replaced by a new model in 2025. Incidentally, Nexo is named after the town of Nexo on Bornholm.

The concept car, which bears the name Initium, gives a clue as to what we can expect from the South Koreans' next bid for a hydrogen car.

Initium differs significantly from Nexo in design and technology. The new model has a more futuristic look and is equipped with a more powerful engine. Initium also introduces the option of using the car's battery as a power source for external devices. For example, the owner's house.

Whether the production-ready version of Initium will come to Denmark is still uncertain. The Danish infrastructure for hydrogen cars is severely limited. In fact, it is non-existent as all hydrogen filling stations are closed.

The number of registered hydrogen cars in Denmark is low, and most have been used for taxi traffic. However, a new EU regulation obliges Denmark to re-establish hydrogen filling stations, which could pave the way for hydrogen cars like Initium. Read more about it here .

Hyundai Initium is expected to be ready for production in the first half of 2025. Until then, we will have to wait and see if Denmark manages to establish the necessary infrastructure to support hydrogen cars.
