Volvo and Mercedes join forces – huge agreement signed

The two truck brands Volvo Trucks and Daimler Trucks have signed an agreement that binds the companies together on the development of the trucks of the future. A kind of choral computers.

In a joint effort to send the trucks of the future onto the streets, Daimler Trucks and Volvo Trucks have entered into an agreement to establish a new 50/50 joint venture company. The company, with headquarters in Gothenburg, will focus on developing a software-defined choretojs platform.

The purpose is to create a control system and a basic platform for digital functions that can be used in the trucks of the future. This platform will also be available to other manufacturers in the industry.

  • – This is an important milestone for the industry and a strong expression of our commitment to the digital transformation, says Karin Rådström from Daimler Trucks in a press release .

Martin Lundstedt, CEO of the Volvo Group, adds:

– Together we are redefining the software architecture of the future to deliver self-optimizing and high-performance trucks that set a new standard for connectivity, safety and efficiency in the industry. We meet the demands of the future in an innovative way.

In addition to the control system and the digital platform, the new company will also develop centralized control units and tools for handling large amounts of data. One of the new features enabled by the platform is wireless software updates for trucks.

How much the new joint company has cost the two truck manufacturers each is unknown. But the deal is hardly cheap for some of them.

In that context, it is interesting that Volvo is currently developing trucks with hydrogen as a fuel. And not just from hydrogen to electricity via fuel cells. The brand is exploring the possibilities of burning hydrogen instead of diesel. Toyota actually does the same. Read more about it here .
