Kevin Magnussen open to wild Formula 1 change

Danish Kevin Magnussen is done with Haas after this season. Officially, the 32-year-old racing driver has no plans, but maybe a wild Formula 1 change is lurking.

Kevin Magnussen's Formula 1 future looks unlikely, but he is keeping the door open for another wild comeback to the sport.

After losing his place to Ferraris junior driver Oliver Bearman and Frenchman Esteban Ocon, the Dane's opportunities in the sport are very small.

But Magnussen suggests that a slight chance of a comeback still exists. Stake F1, as the Sauber team currently calls itself, has yet to announce its final line-up for 2025, leaving an open spot on the team.

The Sauber team is currently led by former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto, who now heads Sauber/Audi.

He is in the process of deciding who will drive alongside Nico Hülkenberg in 2025. The Stake team, which will become Audi's factory team from the 2026 season, will remain under the Stake name until then.

Right now, the team has secured Nico Hulkenberg. And because none of the current Sauber choirs has the future in place, several other names are mentioned. And here K-Mag is among them.

Among the candidates are Mick Schumacher, Williams driver Franco Colapinto and Formula 2 title favorite Gabriel Bortoleto. The stake seat stands as the only remaining option outside of Red Bull's system for those who do not yet have a seat for the upcoming season, increasing competition for the seat.

Magnussen himself will soon say goodbye to his seat at Haas, but he does not rule out a comeback in Formula 1, should an unexpected chance arise.

– On paper, the door is still open, he told the media, including RacingNews365.

– You never know in this sport. I've learned that you never know exactly what's going to happen.

In addition, Magnussen was asked about the possibility of switching to IndyCar after he participated in a single lob in the series earlier in 2021 as a replacement for McLaren's Felix Rosenqvist at Road America.

However, the Danish choir denies that there are concrete plans for him in the American series for next season.

"I don't actually have anything concrete planned for next year," he admitted.

– We have talked about doing something together here at Haas. But in that case it won't be like choirs.”

So although Magnussen is without a Formula 1 seat for 2025, his sporting future remains unclear and the possibility of returning to Formula 1 remains open. At least theoretically.
