BMW builds 30 cars that no one is allowed to buy

Unless you live in Mexico, it is impossible to get your hands on BMW's latest 30 Jahre Edition, which is based on the current M2 Coupé.

BMW is celebrating 30 years in Mexico by introducing a special edition of the brand's M2 model. The BMW M2 Coupe 30 Years Edition is limited to just 30 cars and comes in two special paint finishes, but with only one gearbox option – namely a six-speed manual.

This special edition of the M2 Coupe is available in either Frozen Portimao Blau metallic (matt blue) or Frozen Pure Gray metallic (matt grey).

Each car is equipped with adjustable sports seats in root and black Merino leather. In the cabin, there are also details in carbon fiber and a steering wheel covered with the plastic Alcantara.

The M2 Coupe 30 Years Edition gets the same updates as the regular M2 from the 2025 model year.

Which means that the three-liter straight six with the twin turbos produces 475 horsepower. That's 20 horsepower more than before.

There are also new badges, a new steering wheel and the cabin is updated with the latest version of BMW's iDrive system.

It is not yet known whether the new sun-coloured rims, which will debut on the 2025 model, will also be an optional extra on the 30th anniversary edition. However, according to images from BMW, it appears to be 'less likely'. That is, at best.

All examples of the anniversary model will be built at BMW's plant in San Luis Potosi, which is near Toluca, west of Mexico City. BMW started production in Mexico in 1994 with the E36 generation of the 3 Series. The decision to celebrate 30 years in Mexico also means that the new M2 is only intended for the Mexican market.

The price for the BMW M2 Coupe 30 Years Edition is set at 2,149,900 Mexican pesos, which corresponds to just under 750,000 Danish kroner at the current exchange rate. That's 400,000 pesos more than the regular M2 costs in the country.

It is not known whether BMW has sold all 30 cars. But it is not the first time that the brand has embarked on special editions. It happened i.a. also when the M5 turned 30 in 2014.
