The car brands have been talking about the so-called solid state batteries for years. Now the Chinese in particular believe that the technology is on its way. Some say in 2026.
Solid state technology or solid-state batteries have long been heralded as the revolution electric cars are just waiting for.
So far nothing has happened. Not even if a brand like Toyota has been talking about the technology for years.
But now one of the competitors, the Chinese car manufacturer Chery, believes it is several steps ahead of the Japanese. In fact, the Chinese expect that type of electric car to already exist in 2026.
During Chery's global innovation conference last week, the company said that the development of the solid state batteries is progressing.
The current prototypes have an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, and this is expected to increase to 600 Wh/kg in 2025. If everything goes as Chery predicts, the first cars with soil state batteries will be out to motorists in 2026.

According to Chery, their solid state batteries will be able to give electric cars a range of up to 1,500 kilometers on a single charge.
Although many companies are working on this battery technology, there is still no electric car with a solid state battery on the market. However, two models have been launched this year, Nio ET7 and IM L6, which use semi-solid state batteries.
In addition to the solid state batteries, Chery also presented a number of other new battery technologies in connection with the conference. Among other things, the company has developed square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary and large cylindrical ternary batteries.
These batteries can add up to 400 km of range with just five minutes of charging, the Chinese claim.
Chery further stated that the new square lithium iron phosphate batteries will be used in electric vehicles with a range of 200-600 km and in plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and as range extenders in hybrids with very small gasoline engines.
The large cylindrical battery cells will be used in electric cars with a range of 700 to 1,200 kilometers, while plug-in hybrids with these batteries will have a range of 150-300 km on a single charge.
If Chery's plans to introduce solid state technology in 2026 hold, the Chinese will be out two years sooner than Nissan, for example, thinks it makes sense. Read more about it here .
