There will be no electric cars in the police fleet. At least not in Sweden. No car can simply live up to the demands of law enforcement.
It will not be in Sweden that we see electric police cars. Not even if law enforcement here at home has actually started driving electric cars.
It is the media Vi Bilägare that has asked the National Police in Sweden if there is any idea to have electric patrol cars in Sweden. And the answer is no.
No electric car can simply live up to the Swedes' requirements. This was shown by an investigation that the National Police carried out internally, already last year.
– Sweden is usually far ahead in cases like this, but now we are bound by our agreement. In addition, we look a lot at the car market.
– Now many car brands have turned around and say that the fossil engine is not dead, so we have to adapt to it, says Ulf Granath, who manages the police fleet of cars in Sweden.

There are several reasons why the Swedes choose the electric car. In part, none of the cars that the police can buy meet the requirements.
In part, there is a purchase agreement with Volvo, which runs until 2028. However, there is also the fact that no electric car will be able to drive very far under the pressure that the Swedish police will put the car type under.
– If you drive an electric car at 80-90 km/h, it can drive over 500 kilometers. But if you're on an emergency call with a fully loaded electric car, you won't get more than 150 kilometers of range.
– That's where you have the problem, says Karl Holm, head of the service unit in the Danish Police Agency's economy department, to Politiavisen.
In addition, the infrastructure with public charging stations does not suit the needs of the police. The use of electric cars will require massive investment in the police's own charging stations.
According to the police's own figures, the electric car does not last as well as the emergency ambulance. However, you could still replace a good 2,000 of the small 9,000 police cars that the Swedish police have at their disposal with electric cars. This is because the electric cars are not used for active patrol work.
