Chris has smashed an illegal record in a 9-year-old BMW

In a nine-year-old diesel BMW – definitely a 535d – Chris has smashed the so-called Cannonball Run record with an average speed of 169 km/h.

It all began in 1971 when motoring journalist Brock Yates protested against a new speed limit.

His trip from New York to California later became known as the Cannonball Run. The lob was 'officially' short in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1979, because the authorities put an end to it.

Since then, the chase has taken place under cover of darkness and with a sea of radar equipment to keep an eye on the police. Today, the times are divided into before, during and after the corona pandemic.

The latest record was set after corona in a nine-year-old BMW 535d. With an average speed of 169 km/h, the trip across the USA was a short 27 hours and 16 minutes. A full 9 minutes faster than the previous record.

Chris Stowell was in the car, and he made the whole trip alone. The previous record was set by two people who shared the trip in a Mercedes-AMG E 63. Stowell also achieved a top speed of 243 km/h.

To be able to complete the trip, Stowell built an extra tank on the BMW, so he had 151 liters of diesel with him. It gave him a range of 1,500 kilometers.

Incidentally, there has never been a single serious accident involving other drivers in the 54 years that the Cannonball Run has been short.
