Renault will build the same car for 15 years, says boss

There are very few cars that will have as long a life as Renault's director sets out for the upcoming Renault 5 to have.

Renault's sister brand Nissan is one of the only brands that really pushes a car's lifespan to the limit. GT-R has been here for 17 years now. Fiat did exactly the same with the little 500.

But Renault sees no obstacles in the new Renault 5 being able to be here for at least as long. Or at least almost.

That's what Auto Express writes.

Renault defends itself by saying that with continuous updates of the car – what you would normally call a facelift – you can keep the 5 model relevant for at least 10 to 15 years into the future.

– We don't keep 5 in the same way for seven years. But it's an iconic product, so we don't want to change the design. The structure will remain the same for a long time – perhaps 10, 12 or 15 years – as the Fiat 500 did. But you can change everything inside, says Renault boss Luca de Meo to the newspaper.

The French are also already considering the first updates to the car before the first owners get behind the wheel. Blue. Renault is considering equipping the car with shift pedals at the steering wheel. Unlike a car with a combustion engine, however, the pedals do not have to be used to control the gears.

Renault will instead let drivers control the brakes and the regeneration of energy with the pedals on the steering wheel. In addition, it will enable so-called 'one pedal' drive. In other words, where the car can slow down so much on its own that it is technically only necessary to keep the right foot on the accelerator.
