Italy calls fossil car ban "self-destructive"

Italy has previously called on the EU to reconsider the ban on the combustion engine, now Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni calls the ban self-destructive.

In 2035, the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines will be banned within the EU. Unless these can run on synthetic fuel – the so-called e-fuel.

Earlier, Italy's energy minister called on the EU to reconsider the ban, and now Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni agrees. She calls the ban 'a self-destructive attitude towards both the environment and the car industry'.

Reuters writes that.

In addition to the ban on internal combustion engines, which is supposed to speed up the electrification of the car industry, the EU requires the same industry to reduce CO2 emissions by 55 percent in 2030 compared to 2021 levels.

However, the reality does not live up to what the EU demands from the car industry. Instead, demand for electric cars has generally plummeted in Europe. Read more about it here.

– The challenge of the green transition must not mean that entire industrial sectors have to be shut down, says Giorgia Meloni in a statement to Reuters.

It is worth noting that although Italy and Meloni were against banning the internal combustion engine, the country withdrew its vote when the decision was first made at EU level last year.

Italy is not alone in being critical of the ban on new internal combustion engines that the EU wants to implement. It was, among others, Germany, which for the ban was adopted, got the synthetic fuel exception pushed through.

Since then, several car brands have almost stood in a row to announce that you cannot do without the internal combustion engine after all. Most recently, Volvo has announced that it will not bet solely on the electric car after all.

At Ford, a decision to only sell electric cars in 2030 in Europe has also been withdrawn. In addition, both Mercedes and Volkswagen have announced that the brands will spend hundreds of billions of kroner on the development of new internal combustion engines.
