Two electric cars were among the most stolen cars in 2023

In the 'old days', it was GPS and radios that thieves used when they saw a car. Now they take the whole car with them. Two electric cars in the top 20 show a new recovery.

Is your car among thieves' favorite victims? There is a certain probability of that. At least if you own a Volkswagen or Toyota.

The two most preferred brands among car thieves. This is written by the German Bild.

The report shows that the number of car thefts among the two brands mentioned alone has increased by as much as 115 percent since 2022.

And if you break down the car thefts by car model, last year there were as many as three Toyotas in the top 10. Incidentally, the most stolen Toyota is the Land Cruiser model, which was built between 2003 and 2009.

If we move a little further down the list, two surprises emerge. Car thieves are also interested in electric cars. The 12th most stolen car all of last year was a Kia EV6, while the sister car Hyundai Ioniq 5 squeezed into 14th place.

In relation to the total number of comprehensively insured cars, 0.6 percent of the EV6s were stolen. For the Ioniq 5, it was 0.47 percent.

According to the German settlement, car thefts in 2023 cost the insurance companies, and thus indirectly the customers, a staggering 310 million euros last year. This corresponds to 2.3 billion Danish kroner.

According to figures from the Danish industry organization Forsikring og Pension, approximately 2,400 cars are stolen a year in Denmark. Half of them are never found again. At home, it is mainly brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes that car thieves go after.

But the thieves can also go after individual parts for these cars. Earlier this year, a wave of thefts of car parts spread especially in Zealand. Read more about it here .
