New study claims to debunk the log about electric cars

In a new investigation, England's CAP HPI claims to have uncovered a bigger lie about electric cars. Namely that they are often scrapped for even minor damage.

It has happened. This means that electric cars have been declared a total loss even due to minor damage. But the fact that they are scrapped to a greater extent than petrol and diesel cars is not appropriate.

A British investigation claims to have found that out.

– The survey challenges one of the many misconceptions about electric cars, says Jon Clay from Cap HPI.

In fact, the British write that diesel and petrol cars are scrapped twice as much as electric cars. Even when age is taken into account.

Specifically, CAP HPI writes that they have examined cars in Great Britain from 2015 to August 2024.

The cars that have been looked at are less than five years old. And here it was found that 0.9 percent of all electric cars were scrapped, while that figure is 1.89 percent for all cars with combustion engines in the same period.

For just one-year-old diesel and petrol cars, the figure is 0.4 percent and 0.2 percent for electric cars, the British believe.

– The data clearly shows that electric cars depreciate half as much as petrol and diesel cars, says Jon Clay, from CAP HPI.

And then he lashed out at the car industry, which he doesn't think takes enough responsibility. Especially in the face of misinformation.

– The automotive industry must collectively address the wave of misinformation surrounding electric vehicles available online to enable consumers to make informed and balanced decisions about their next car.

Last year, the news agency Reuters wrote that in many cases there is nothing to be done for electric cars with even minor damage to battery packs. Therefore, the owners end up being paid compensation for total damages.
