Recalls 100,000 cars – parts of the roof can fly off

A manufacturing error means that Kia is now tinkering with the roof on the Sportage and Carnival models. A mistake that is also dangerous for others in traffic.

Owners of Kia Carnival and Sportage models built between 2022 and 2024 and 2023 and 2024, respectively, have good reason to be aware these days.

At least in the USA, where Kia is now recalling 100,000 copies of the models after it has emerged that there is a weakness in the cars' roof rails.

They can quite individually fly off the cars when the speed is high enough. Kia itself calls it a manufacturing defect. And while the roof strips do not mean anything for the car's ability to move forward in traffic, such loose objects can be a big nuisance for the rest of the traffic.

Kia in the US first became aware of the problem last September. But because the parts have been ripped off and are therefore gone, the importer apologizes that it has been difficult to find the exact cause.

However, Kia has since come to the conclusion that the roof strips can loosen at speeds of around 145 kilometers per hour. This means that from March 15, Kia will begin recalling cars in the United States.

Boosted has asked the Danish Kia importer if the problem on the American models is something known about here at home.

However, the Carnival model is no longer sold in Denmark, so we did not want to hold the Danish importer responsible for that car. But Danish Kia customers now have nothing to fear either.

To Boosted, the importer states that the Sportage model, which is sold in Denmark, is built in Slovakia. And that there is no coincidence with the Sportage model in the USA.

However, Kia is far from the only car brand that has to recall cars these days. Shortly before the New Year, it emerged that a car brand has to issue such a large recall that people fear they will have to go to market for spare parts. Read more about it here .
