Stole from 166 cars in Denmark – going to prison for a very long time

Two men, aged 39 and 43 respectively, have each received a prison sentence of more than two years for 166 burglaries in vans in Denmark. The thefts amounted to more than DKK 6 million.

In an extensive case of theft from vans, two men were arrested on 20 October 2023 in Hvidovre. They were in possession of a significant amount of stolen tools originating from burglaries in 166 vans in several different police districts.

After the arrest, a thorough investigation was launched. The police were quickly able to connect the men to a series of thefts that had taken place in several police districts, including South Zealand, Central and West Zealand and North Zealand.

The two men have been in custody since the arrest, while the case has been investigated further.

The investigation revealed a total of 175 cases of theft from vans. However, it was not only in Denmark that the accused had been active.

This is what the South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police write in a press release .

During a search of their residence abroad, carried out in cooperation with foreign authorities, several stolen items were found. Some of these could be directly linked to 11 thefts in Denmark.

The defendants chose to admit their guilt in all 186 cases, which had a total value of over DKK 6 million. Both men were subsequently convicted for their actions.

A central part of the case concerned the many stolen tools that were seized by the police. A large amount of the seized tools was unfortunately impossible to connect to specific owners, as it was not marked. The police therefore emphasize the importance of tools being marked either via engraving, DNA marking or other forms of identification.

Registering tools with serial number, age and value can help the police prove ownership and thus return stolen items to their rightful owners.

In this case, it has proved difficult, as many of the seized objects were without clear characteristics that could lead them back to the original owners.
