David Savage, who is deputy director of the Irish company Geotab, claims to have shattered a huge myth about electric car batteries.
In a larger survey by the accounting firm EY, 43 percent answered that they stay away from electric cars because they fear that the battery will have to be replaced. But that fear is unfounded, says David Savage.
He is deputy director of the Irish company Geotab, where 5,000 modern electric cars and the battery packs in them have been examined. According to the Irish, there is no mistaking the conclusion.
Electric car batteries lose what on average corresponds to 1.8 percent capacity per year. But this, says Geotab, is only the beginning. And it is actually an improvement compared to a similar survey from 2019.
Here it was concluded that the batteries of electric cars lose an average of 2.3 percent of their capacity in the first few years. Based on that, the Irish believe they know that the batteries in modern electric cars now last for 20 years or more.
– The figures show that if the battery is kept in order, it comfortably lasts longer than the rest of the car in the latest electric car models and never needs to be replaced, says David Savage.

However, the investigation cannot say anything about how much capacity the battery packs in electric cars lose in the last years of the cars' life. The number of cars of that age is simply too small.
However, Geotab points out that you cannot find higher capacity losses in battery packs from electric cars with high mileage. At least not when compared to other electric cars.
– This should be welcome news for rental companies, because electric cars do not lose their value by being short, writes Geotab .
But not all batteries are created equal. And not all batteries perform equally well, David Savage admits. The battery packs do best in a mild climate.
Just as it is best if the battery packs are cooled by water and not air. But the Irish already believe that motorists can feel safe by replacing the internal combustion engine with an electric one.
– Consumers must feel confident that many of today's electric cars are suitable and cost-effective to replace several different internal combustion cars, says David Savage.
On the other hand, it is not necessarily the battery packs that are decisive for the electric car's loss of value. Right now the car brands are spraying out new models at a furious pace.
Several motorists have already noticed that their cars are in several cases out of date after six months, because a facelift has been sent to the street. Read more about that criticism here .
