The warning triangle becomes illegal – here is the replacement

In Spain, the country's drivers have already been informed that the warning triangle is no longer legal from 1 January 2026. The replacement already exists.

In Spain, the regular warning triangle, which is placed no more than 100 meters away from a broken down train, is on its way out. The relay lights up by itself.

From 1 January 2026, so-called Road Flare Signals – V16 lights – must be used in Spain. They are small and very powerful LED lamps with magnetic mounts, which are attached directly to the car.

This is written by the Spanish traffic authority DGT, Dirección General de Tráfico.

In addition, the Spaniards will eventually – so far it is voluntary – require all new cars to emit a so-called virtual "V-27" signal to nearby cars in the event of a breakdown.

The virtual signal tells where the car is and that it may pose a danger to other road users in the area.

The V-16 light, which will soon become mandatory in Spain, is directly linked to a GPS signal. Signals go directly into a database about the traffic on the Spanish roads, so that drivers in the vicinity can be notified immediately after the accident.

The Spanish authorities recommend that motorists acquire the new warning lights from suppliers such as Help Flash and SOS Traffic. But there are other suppliers and products on the market.

Not acquiring a warning triangle – and after 1 January the legally required LED light – can become an expensive affair. According to Murcia Today, the fine is up to 200 euros, equivalent to 1,500 Danish kroner.

In Denmark, there is no law requiring drivers to carry a warning triangle in their car. Conversely, a warning triangle must be used to warn other road users if/when the accident is imminent.
