400,000 cars is not enough – more BMWs are dangerous

Earlier this month, BMW recalled 400,000 older 3 Series. Now it turns out that even more cars are driving around with dangerous airbags.

Dieselgate is not the only huge scandal in the automotive industry. BMW is currently affected by an at least equally serious one of its kind.

Airbags that melt mean the German brand earlier this month recalled 400,000 older 3 Series which owners themselves retrofitted with M Sport steering wheels.

But the steering wheel is probably equipped with defective and life-threatening airbags from Japanese Takata. A defect that affected so many car brands and models that Takata went bankrupt in 2018.

But the defective many airbags may still be out there. Especially since BMW didn't get hold of all of them when the cars were initially recalled way back in 2016.

Now, according to Carscoops , it appears that newer 5-series from 2014, 6-series from 2014, X3 from 2013/14 and X5 and M4 year 2014 are also affected by the problem.

Therefore, BMW has added another 1,145 cars to the nearly 400,000 cars that were initially recalled earlier in July.

The fault lies in the fact that the trigger for the airbag with the internal factory code PSDI-5 can crumble away over time. If that happens, the airbag will explode with unwanted brutality in the event of an accident.

With other car brands, it is already quickly leading to death. And in 2022 alone, five traffic deaths were officially linked to the life-threatening airbag.

A total of 33 drivers have lost their lives due to the dangerous airbags. Most recently, a Honda Accord owner from Kentucky, USA, died when the airbag caused it to fly with metal splinters in the cabin. However, Honda tried for a very long time to get hold of the owner before the terrible accident. Read more about it here .
