1,300 lost their jobs – now abandoned car factory reopens

No cars have been built at the Belvidere plant in Illinois, USA, since the last Jeep Cherokee left the assembly line in February 2023. Now, however, there is hope.

Both General Motors and Stellantis have received a pool of more than 1 billion dollars, corresponding to 6.8 billion Danish kroner, from the US government. Now the money can reopen the closed car factory.

Since the last Jeep Cherokee left the assembly line in February 2023, the factory has been idle. Stellantis, of which Jeep is a part, owns the site. At the time, 1,350 employees lost their jobs. But from here until now there has been no release to be traced.

Not even if the group, as part of wage negotiations with its employees, had to promise that a solution was found that would reopen the Belvidere factory.

Carscoops writes that.

Now $334 million of US government money has been earmarked to transform the factory into a 'hub for electrification'. Another of Stellantis' factories, which builds gearboxes in the state of Indiana, has received another 250 million dollars from the pool.

According to the US government, the money will help the country's car groups to re-employ people and re-equip their factories.

There are quite a few closed and abandoned car factories. Over time, even some of the most iconic factories have succumbed. And we don't need to travel to the United States to find that out.

Danish Claus, for example, bought the last Saab that was ever built at the brand's factory in Trollhättan, Sweden. Recently, the director of the company that bought the remains of Saab and then went bankrupt himself, had to shed a tear when the historic factory became empty. Read more about it here .

Ford also has to admit that it has not been able to find any buyers for its factory in Saarlouis, Germany. In relation to Boosted, Ford in Denmark tried to deny the story, but now it turns out that a pharmaceutical company has taken over the place.
